Moving to Bulgaria from the UK

Brexit turned this from a formality into a process. The process is manageable — if you do it in the right order.

5 min readUpdated 16 September 2026

British citizens who moved to Bulgaria before the end of the transition period retain their protected status under the Withdrawal Agreement. Everyone arriving now is a third-country national: 90 days in any 180 across the whole Schengen area, and a D visa from a consulate in the UK if you intend to stay longer. That single change is the difference between "we'll see how it goes" and "plan it properly".

The 90/180 rule, precisely

Since Bulgaria joined Schengen fully in 2025, days spent anywhere in the Schengen area count towards the same 90-day allowance. A month in Spain reduces your Bulgarian allowance. Overstaying carries entry bans, and the entry-exit system makes informal arrangements a thing of the past. If you intend to live here, apply for the right permit before you go — see residence permits for non-EU citizens.

The money comparison

This is where the move makes sense. A median Sofia apartment asks €238,000 — €2,538 per square metre — against typical UK city prices several times that. A one-bedroom rents for a median €635 a month. Income tax is a flat 10%. A monthly transport pass covering four metro lines and the whole surface network is €25.60.

The counterweight is income: Bulgarian salaries outside IT and shared services are a fraction of UK ones. This move works best for people who keep a foreign income — remote employment, a UK pension, rental income, a business — and far less well for those who need to earn locally.

Healthcare

A UK GHIC covers emergency and medically necessary treatment on a visitor basis, not residence. Once you are a resident you contribute to the National Health Insurance Fund and use the public system, which is inexpensive and uneven; most foreign residents also carry private cover at €40–90 a month for faster access to specialists and English-speaking clinics. Sofia has several good private hospitals, concentrated in the south and east of the city.

The practical list

  • Driving licence. A UK licence can be exchanged for a Bulgarian one; do it within the permitted window after establishing residence rather than waiting for a traffic stop to remind you.
  • Pensions. UK state pension is payable in Bulgaria, and there is a double-taxation agreement in place. Take advice before moving a private pension — this is where expensive mistakes happen.
  • Banking. Open a Bulgarian account early: utilities, the building fund and the annual property tax are all far simpler with one. Bulgaria is in the euro area, so SEPA transfers from a UK euro account are cheap and fast.
  • Tax. More than 183 days in a calendar year generally makes you Bulgarian tax-resident. Notify HMRC, understand the treaty, and get an hour of local advice before your first Bulgarian tax year.
  • Pets. Animal health certificates, rabies vaccination and the usual EU rules apply; plan around the timelines rather than the flight.

Where British movers actually go

Three distinct groups. Remote workers and younger movers concentrate in Sofia — the centre, Lozenets and the metro-served estates. Retirees head for the countryside and the smaller towns, where houses cost a fraction of anything in the UK and the trade-off is distance from hospitals. And a long-standing coastal contingent buys around Varna and Burgas, which is a genuinely different market with its own risks — seasonality, complex fees and thin resale.

If Sofia is the destination, start with the scored neighbourhood ranking and then read the pages for the four that fit your budget.

The honest downsides

Winter air quality in Sofia is poor. Institutions operate in Bulgarian and slowly. Salaries are low if you need a local job. Healthcare is cheap but variable, and you will probably pay privately. And the paperwork that used to be automatic now costs several months and a few hundred euro in apostilles and translations. None of that is a reason not to come; all of it is a reason to arrive prepared.

Frequently asked questions

Can a British citizen move to Bulgaria after Brexit?

Yes, as a third-country national. You get 90 days in any 180 across the Schengen area as a visitor; to stay longer you need a type D long-stay visa obtained at a Bulgarian consulate in the UK, followed by a residence card issued in Bulgaria.

How much money do I need to live in Bulgaria from the UK?

A comfortable single-person budget in Sofia is around €1,450 a month including rent; a careful one is closer to €950. Outside Sofia, both figures fall considerably.

Can I use my UK driving licence in Bulgaria?

For a visit, yes. Once you become resident you should exchange it for a Bulgarian licence within the permitted window rather than continuing to drive on the UK one indefinitely.

Is my UK pension paid in Bulgaria?

The UK state pension is payable to residents of Bulgaria, and a double-taxation agreement determines which country taxes what. Take professional advice before transferring a private pension.

What happens to my healthcare?

A GHIC covers emergencies as a visitor. As a resident you contribute to the National Health Insurance Fund; most British residents also buy private cover at €40–90 a month for faster specialist access.

How much does a house or flat cost in Bulgaria compared with the UK?

A median Sofia apartment asks €238,000 at €2,538 per square metre. Rural houses cost a fraction of that. The relevant comparison is not price but liquidity — village property is very slow to resell.

Where do most British people move to in Bulgaria?

Three clusters: remote workers in Sofia, retirees in the countryside and smaller towns, and a long-standing coastal group around Varna and Burgas. Each is a different market with different risks.

Do I become a Bulgarian tax resident automatically?

Generally after more than 183 days in a calendar year, or if your centre of vital interests moves here. That is independent of which permit you hold — get local advice before your first Bulgarian tax year.
